Abstract: The article covers questions of musical specifics of the Norwegian Sami yoik – musical and poetic improvisations, which perform various functions in the ethnical traditional culture. The characteristics of rhythmic and pitch organization of joik are identified by means of the structural-typological research method.
The basis of yoik tunes are short, concise formulas repeated with minimal melodic-rhythmic variation. The tune of the yoik is formed by string-like arrangement and free combination of similar and contrasting structural elements that do not perform a certain function within a musical composition that resembles a “ring form”. Among the specific features of the yoiks is onomatopoeia, which characterizes the inclusion of the Sami tradition in the natural landscape.
